Martin University Names John Girton, Jr. as New Director of Marketing & Communications

Updated: Oct 14

Martin University today announced that John E. Girton, Jr. has been named Director of Marketing and Communications, effective August 17. His responsibilities include leading the overall strategy for the Marketing and Communications Department at the state’s only Predominantly Black Institution (PBI).

For over five years, Girton was lead pastor at CMBCIndy where he was affectionately known as Pastor G. Most recently, he was Director of Creative Services for Tennessee State University and an Instructor of Journalism and Telecommunications at Ball State University.

“John is a seasoned communications professional and comes to Martin University with a wealth of experience. As an urban servant leader who is well known and respected, he has a strong presence in our community. These qualifications make him an ideal fit for Martin,” said Dr. Sean Huddleston, President.

Girton has also instructed students in various areas of media, marketing and communications at ITT Technical Institute and The First Amendment Center’s Freedom Forum on the Campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

In addition, he has been a media producer and instructional designer for organizations such as Hospital Corporation of America, Marion County Public Health Department, St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and the University of Indianapolis.

Girton is Founder of the UniteForChange.org movement. He recently galvanized the Near-Westside with his 30-day Tent Campaigns by raising awareness of the victims of senseless violence -- as well as bringing faith, political, business and philanthropic leaders together to unite for positive change in his city.

He holds a BS degree in communications from Ball State University and a MA in Urban Ministry Studies from Martin University. He has had advanced studies at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Trevecca Nazarene University and Tennessee State University.

Girton is married to LaWanda Girton and has three children.

Martin University’s mission is to provide excellence in educating and developing traditional and non-traditional students in an inclusive, supportive, and healthy collegiate environment.
