Martin University's drop-in childcare center changed everything for Stacey Lewis in 2017. For three years, she balanced school and parenting, eventually graduating with a degree in early childhood education. Now, she works part-time at the same center.
With one in five U.S. college students being parents, childcare remains a top barrier to higher education. In Indiana, only 13% of student parents graduate in four years compared to 48% of their childless peers.
Martin University stands out as the only college in Indianapolis providing free on-site childcare to its students. Rebecca Doane, the center's director, estimates that 90% of Martin students are parents.
