Joyce Yarbro Program
Martin University and The Joyce Yarbro Program provide access and opportunity to academically under-prepared students from low-income backgrounds and communities who are generally under-represented in higher education. Unlike many state programs which target high achieving high school graduates, the Joyce Yarbro Program endeavors to serve at-risk students. Students who demonstrate a high level of academic enthusiasm, the aspiration to overcome personal and financial tribulations, and the vision to institute career goals which, when obtained, moves them out of poverty and into the country’s mainstream economy are our ideal candidates.
The charge of the Joyce Yarbro Program is to optimize students’ learning experiences and to provide the support systems of academic success. The Yarbro staff subscribes to the philosophy of intensive, developmental mentoring and advising. The Joyce Yarbro Program’s major services include mentoring, coordinating tutorial services, tracking attendance, and ensuring classroom instruction of foundation and university-level courses.

Who was Joyce Yarbro?
Joyce Yarbro worked as an administrative assistant to Sr. Jane Schilling, the Vice-president of Martin University. Joyce loved all people and assisted Martin University students in any way she could. She assisted teachers in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) among many other community activities. Everyone at Martin who knew Joyce still talk about how friendly and giving Joyce's spirit was. She was a victim of domestic violence whose passing drew national attention. Joyce has two daughters who survive her. Sr. Jane Schilling named the program after Joyce Yarbro because she felt if Joyce was alive she would love bringing young people to Martin University.
