Martin University Offers Convenient Mammogram Screening

On Monday, September 25, Martin University will hold its 10th Mammograms at Martin event from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event occurs twice a year and gives assistance to women age 40 and older that might otherwise not be able to afford the full cost of a mammogram.

The event is made possible through a partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation Indianapolis Affiliate and the St. Vincent Breast Center. With the help from these partners, Martin University is able to bring mammograms to the university grounds, which means convenient access for the neighborhood’s citizens.

"Many women can’t afford to get basic health screenings like mammograms. Even if they have a part-time job, or even two jobs, they may still be making difficult choices about how to spend income," said Sue Sheridan, Director of Community Health Services for Martin. "We want to help women who would otherwise not be able to afford the mammogram, and educate the community that screenings save lives."

The Mammograms at Martin event is so successful that all open slots are filled weeks in advance. However, help is still available. "We want to lend a hand to anyone who needs it," said Sheridan. "If you are in-between jobs or without insurance coverage and need help getting preventive services such as mammograms, pap tests, and colon cancer screenings, we’ll use our resources to help you the best way we can."

Sheridan wants everyone to know that Martin programs are not just for students. "Martin does everything it can to reach out to the extended members of the Martin community," she said. "Mammograms at Martin is just one of a long list of health resources offered by the Healing Village of Martin University."

Anyone needing assistance to receive a mammogram or who may be interested in future Mammograms at Martin events should contact Sue Sheridan at 317-917-3339.
