Martin University will partner with the Indiana chapters of Go On Girl! Book Club, a national reading group, to host the kick-off of Indiana Black Expo’s (IBE) 36th Annual Summer Celebration Literary Café on July 7, 2006 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event will be held in Martin University’s Gathertorium at 2171 Avondale Place, Indianapolis, IN.
As the venue hosts, Martin University and Go On Girl! Book Club will present nationally and locally known authors to IBE attendees. Activities will also include an author parlor and meet-and-greet opportunities.
Martin University remains the only predominately African-American university in the state of Indiana serving approximately 800 students at its campus in the Martindale-Brightwood community in Indianapolis. It is a private, nonprofit, non-denominational institution dedicated to providing educational opportunities to low-income, minority and adult-aged learners in a healing and freedom-minded environment.
Founded in 1991, Go On Girl! Book Club is one of the largest national reading groups for African-American women. It currently has more than 34 chapters around the country. Each month chapter members read and discuss the same title, then forward feedback to publishers, authors and agents.
Indiana Black Expo is a year-round, multifaceted community service organization with 11 chapters around the state of Indiana. It is known for its two major fund-raisers, Summer Celebration (drawing more than 300,000 in attendance) and Circle City Classic (drawing more than 175,000 spectators). It is governed by a board of directors comprised of individuals and community leaders from around the state of Indiana and employs a full time staff. The mission is to be an effective voice and vehicle for the social and economic advancement of African-Americans.
