Historic Figure Frederick Douglass Portrayed at Martin University

Every year, faculty and staff at Martin University perform, in costume, the life and times of Frederick Douglass. This year’s performance will be on March 9 at 6:30 p.m. The theme will be Frederick Douglass: Spirit Warrior, which will focus on how Douglass, portrayed by Fr. Boniface Hardin, president of Martin University, fought for the freedoms of African-Americans and how he drove evil spirits away from them.

"Douglass was a spirit warrior in how he retrieved Blacks from the lethargy of words and contradiction," said President Hardin. "He didn’t do it with guns, violence, or revenge, but with directive anger. Slavery became too acceptable with religionists and the government even during the Civil War."

The performance will be FREE to the public and will be held in the Martin University Gathertorium, located at 2171 Avondale Place. For more information on the performance or Martin University, call 543-3235 or visit www.martin.edu.
