Martin University Gives Honorary Doctorate to Imam W. Deen Mohammed

On Saturday, November 18, Fr. Boniface Hardin, president of Martin University, gave an Honorary Doctorate of Islamic Thought to Imam W. Deen Mohammed, a leader of American Muslims. The Honorary Doctorate was given at the Nur Allah Islamic Center’s14th Annual Parent’s Appreciation Banquet held at Martin University.

Imam Mohammed has been a leader of the Muslim community and is the son of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad - founder, leader, and builder of The Nation of Islam. His leadership, involvement on major issues, and Scriptural interpretation of social issues have brought him numerous awards and high honors. In 1992, Mohammed delivered the first Invocation in the U.S. Senate to be given by a Muslim. He gave Islamic Prayer at President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Interfaith Prayer services in 1993 and 1997. Mohammed also met with Pope John Paul, II, at the "eve of the New Millennium," in St. Peter’s Basilica, along with many other world religious leaders. He has been giving numerous awards and honors for promoting interfaith dialogue, peace, and understanding in the U.S.
