Martin University Celebrates Anniversary
On Wednesday, August 9, Martin University will celebrate its 29th Anniversary. On that date in 1977, the university, originally named Martin Center College, received a letter from the Indiana Commission for Post-Secondary Education authorizing Martin to function as a school.
"We have come a long way from our humble beginning nearly 30 years ago," said Rev. Fr. Boniface Hardin, Founder and President of Martin University. "There are a lot of people who said that a university like Martin wouldn’t work, but it has. Enrollment continues to grow every year. I couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments of our graduates, faculty, and staff."
Through the leadership of Fr. Hardin, the original mission of Martin University remains: to serve low-income, minority, and adult learners in a healing, freedom-minded environment. This mission has provided more than 1,200 degrees to Indianapolis students, enabling them to get better jobs, build self-esteem, and serve as role models to family and friends.
Martin University, originally located at 35th St. and College Ave., moved to its current location on Avondale Place in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood in 1987. Housed initially in a former church and school, the campus grew to include many other structures in the immediate area. In 2001, a $10-million-dollar Educational Center and adjoining Peace Garden opened.
Martin University is the only predominately African-American accredited liberal arts institution of higher learning in Indiana. Martin offers 17 undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees. The average student is 40 years old.
