Alumni Association Fundraiser Helps Martin University Meet Goal

January 18, 2007

The Martin University Alumni Association (MUAA) raised $10,210 in pledges through its Annual Scholarship Fundraiser in 2006 by hosting a Phone-a-thon with calls going out to Alumni and the Indianapolis community. The money will be awarded in scholarships for Martin University students. Scholarships are awarded based on GPA, essay presentation, community service, and faculty and community leader recommendation criteria.

More than $6,555 in actual cash donated during the fundraiser will be matched dollar-for-dollar by The Lilly Endowment through its Education Initiative match program.

Since June 2005, The Lilly Endowment has committed to matching donations to Martin University dollar-for-dollar, up to one million dollars. The university had until December 31, 2006 to maximize The Lilly Endowment's million-dollar-match opportunity. Money from the MUAA Phone-a-thon helped the university meet the million dollar goal.

Martin University is a private, not-for-profit institution, and the only predominantly black university in Indiana. More than 80 percent of Martin University students receive some type of financial aid. Scholarships are awarded based on GPA, essay presentation, community service, and faculty and community leader recommendation criteria.

"We are grateful for the kindness the community has shown Martin University," said Dorenda Roberson, director of Alumni Relations at Martin University. "Martin prides itself on making higher education possible for people of all backgrounds; every contribution truly makes a difference in their lives."
