School of Mathematics and Sciences

Mission and Purpose

The mission and purpose of the School of Mathematics and Sciences is to offer quality undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs to Martin students. This mission is aligned University’s mission to provide higher education opportunities to minority and low-income persons who can benefit from learning. Our goal is to increase the number of graduates, particularly, minority graduates who will competitively apply for graduate studies and jobs in STEM fields.


The School’s curricula support the University’s General Education core curriculum. The curriculum for each major engages students inside and outside the classroom and is supported by undergraduate research, internship experiences and study abroad programs.


The School of Mathematics and Sciences adheres closely to University academic policies. All baccalaureate degree programs offered through the School requires a total of 123 credit hours of coursework. The School will accept transfer credits for equivalent courses completed at a regionally-accredited University or College in the United States. Courses completed outside the U.S. may be accepted upon receipt of the credit recommendations from a recognized credit evaluation service, such as the World Education Services or the International Education Research Foundation, Inc. Until an official transcript is received, no transfer credits will be recorded by the University.


Faculty I the School of Mathematics and Sciences hold terminal degrees in their fields and each faculty advises and mentors students in his/her area of expertise. The School of mathematics is now a member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the Indiana Mathematical Association of America (IMAA). Applications are underway for membership in specialized disciplinary area organizations such as the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS).
