Governor Mitch Daniels Brings Greetings to Martin University’s Largest Graduating Class

Indianapolis, IN: - On Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Martin University will host its 39th commencement in the Gathertorium. The commencement speaker will be Mr. Nathan McCall, renowned author of “Makes Me Wanna Hollar” and “Them”. The Honorable Mitch Daniels, Governor, will bring greetings.

Persons receiving honorary doctorates are as follows:

  • Mr. J. C. Huizenga
  • Ms. Alpha Blackburn
  • Mr. Nathan McCall
  • Dr. T. Garrott Benjamin
  • Rev. Fitzhugh Lyons
  • Pastor Jeffrey Johnson
  • Ms. Thelma Wyatt
  • Mr. James H. Trotter

One hundred and twenty-five students will be graduated, which is the largest graduating class in the university’s history.

The ages of graduates ranges from 23 – 85. Each student has a unique story to describe their journey. Ms. Kandis Williams came to Martin University in December of 2005. She had come to Indianapolis to stay with friends after being displaced from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Ms. Williams had attended college two other times before enrolling at Martin; but she never finished. Two and a half years later, Ms. Williams did finish, and she is graduating on May 4 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

NEW PRESIDENT NAMED FOR MARTIN UNIVERSITY

Dr. Algeania Freeman, former president of Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC, and president and CEO of The Freeman Group, Inc., a consulting group, has been named president of Martin University, succeeding Founding President Rev. Fr. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B.

Dr. Freeman, 58, will assume her duties on January 1, 2008, becoming the second president in the history of the 30-year-old institution. The incoming president brings 35 years of higher education experience, serving in senior administrative positions as a President, Vice President of Advancement, Dean, Department Chair, and Professor of Communications.
