Events commemorating the inauguration will span three days, and includes a student/ alumni-led forum Thursday, September 27, focused on Political Empowerment; a First Lady's Reception; the Investiture Luncheon; and a Scholarship/Fundraising Gala in the evening on Friday, September 28.

Family Day events on Saturday, September 29 will unite the Martin local community with student, faculty, and staff volunteers in a campus-wide Picnic, Day of Fun, and Health/Wellness-focused Outreach activities.

Saturday, September 22

Event:       Alumni-led Community Beautification Day

Location:   Martin University Local Community

Time:        9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Cost:         None. Volunteers needed. Registration encouraged.


“Promoting Clean Environments to Improve Quality of Life” - Martin University alumni and student volunteers will conduct a neighborhood cleanup and beautification project. They will cut weeds, gather up litter; meet and greet community members to encourage their involvement in urban revitalization; share information that promotes healthy outdoor environments; and extend invitations to local residents to participate in the Inaugural campus-based events. Partnerships/Sponsorships will be sought with community organizations and local businesses.

Thursday September 27

Event:       Student/Alumni-hosted Empowerment Forum

Location:   Martin University Gathertorium

Time:        TBD – early afternoon

Cost:         None. Open to the public.


“Empowerment through Political Activism” - Martin University students and alumni will host a panel discussion/open forum addressing the importance of voting and political involvement. In another year of high profile electioneering for offices throughout the land, we are reminded of the importance of an informed and involved citizenry that participates in the electoral process of our democratic republic.  Martin University students and alumni representatives will host a panel discussion and open forum addressing the importance of voting and political involvement.  Keynote Speaker: State Representative William Crawford. Panelists pending.

Event:       First Lady’s Reception

Location:   Skyline Club, downtown Indianapolis

Time:        6:30 – 8:30 pm

Cost:         Special invitation required for Admission. Proceeds from Silent Auction and to benefit student scholarship funds. Additional donations encouraged.


“Evening of Elegance” -- This is an “ invitation only” event hosted by Dr. Ingrid Watson Miller focused on women’s groups as well as female business and community leaders. Female trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and student representatives, inaugural delegates, and out-of-town guests will be invited. A silent auction will be conducted and live music will be provided by a youth jazz group.



Friday September 28

Event:       Investiture of Dr. George E. Miller, III

Location:   Martin University Gathertorium

Time:        10:00 am – 12 noon

Cost:         None. Open to the public. Registration encouraged as seating will be limited.


Dr. George E. Miller III will be inaugurated as Martin University’s third president during this morning ceremony. Delegates from colleges and universities, professional societies, and business, political, and community organizations will be on hand to participate in the pomp and circumstance of the official investiture ceremony with the Martin University family.



Event:       Inauguration/Investiture Luncheon for Delegates and Special Guests

Location:   Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel

Time:        1:00 – 3:00 pm

Cost:         By Invitation Only. Tickets will be provided.


Appreciation/Recognition luncheon for delegates, investiture program participants, and special guests. Keynote Speaker: Dr. Lauren Dungy-Poythress, Medical Director, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Office, Community Health Network.

Event:       Scholarship Dinner/Gala

Location:   Indianapolis Marriott East Hotel

Time:        6:30 pm – 12 midnight

Cost:         $100 per person; $1500 for a patron table of 10, which includes additional donation. Gala Sponsorships, beginning at $2,500 are available.


Join the Martin University community and the delegates from around the nation as they welcome and congratulate newly inaugurated president Dr. George E. Miller III and his wife Dr. Ingrid Watson Miller. The evening will begin with an opening reception followed by dinner, a brief program, and live musical entertainment with dancing. 

Saturday September 29

Event:       Prayer Breakfast

Location:   Indianapolis Marriott East

Time:        8:00 – 10:00 am

Cost:         No charge, though pre-registration will be required and donations to scholarship fund encouraged.


You are invited to join President and Mrs. Miller and local leaders for a prayer breakfast on Saturday morning to honor the legacy of Martin University’s first 35 years and reflect upon the future of the University.


Event:       Family/Community Picnic and Health & Wellness Outreach

Location:   Martin University Campus

Time:        12 noon – 5:00 pm

Cost:         $7/person; $20/family of four (T-shirt and food included with ticket purchase)

                  Advance purchase of tickets strongly encouraged to ensure event admission.


Picnic, with a fun-focused atmosphere of special activities for children and youth, face painting, music, and food. Representatives from local community, law enforcement, and health organizations will help to host health and wellness booths/displays as well as other quality of life events.
