Language and Fine Arts Division

The Language and Fine Arts Division offers Bachelor’s degrees in Liberal Arts, Spanish, and Music.

Mission

Martin University is a "University of the Humanities," which means that all students receive a comprehensive background in the Liberal Arts to support their studies in the major field. The mission of the Language and Arts Division is: (1) help all students at Martin University become humanists, and self-fulfilled people enjoying the broadest education in order to be truly free in mind and spirit, and (2) support the overall mission of the University.

Critical thinking, reading, and writing are emphasized. Andragogy is the method used to introduce students to several areas of human inquiry and challenge them to develop competencies in critical analysis and self-expression. Every instructor throughout the University receives continuing support to help reinforce and enhance critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Courses are structured to be culturally inclusive and comprehensive for our global society. The division provides a range of course offerings, which reflect the fundamental characteristics of the universal human condition.

General Objectives

To provide students with a clear, concise, and thorough grounding in the use of critical thinking, which will enable them to learn more effectively in all their course work at Martin University. To help them understand, assess, and interpret the world we share, and communicate effectively in today’s complex work environment.

Objectives: English

  1. To insure that each student can demonstrate the ability to express his or her ideas in a coherent, creative, and appropriate written form.

  2. To broaden students’ reading abilities so that they are confident in understanding new materials related to academic, professional, and personal interests.

  3. To offer students the opportunities to practice, develop, and master verbal communications and public speaking skills.

  4. To familiarize students with literature so that they are aware of its pleasures, important contemporary issues, and enduring traditions of our culture.

Objectives: Foreign Language

  1. Students will develop listening skills in order to understand what is being communicated to them by foreign language speakers.

  2. Students will communicate with others with confidence in their responses.

  3. Students will begin to read in foreign language specified so they they can read a newspaper or magazine.

  4. Students will write in foreign language specified so that they can write an essay on any particular subject.

  5. Students will explore the culture of the country of the foreign language specified in order to be able to compare and contrast cultural mores between the cultures of the United States and other countries that speak that particular foreign language.

Objectives: Fine Arts

  1. Students who take Fine Arts courses as liberal arts electives will be taught to develop an appreciation of the role of fine arts in a diverse culture.

  2. Students who choose to pursue a minor in Fine Arts will develop the objectives for their minor in consultation with their mentor and faculty members in Language Arts Division. These objectives must be individualized because the minor may be concentrated in music, theater, or visual art.

  3. A student with a degree in music will develop basic and specialized knowledge of all aspects of music theory, music appreciation and be required to perform in a junior and senior recital for completion of a degree. A portfolio of the music performed will be kept on file to support applications for further education or employment.
