International Experiences
The philosophy underlying the Globalization Program at Martin University is based upon a belief that people who have engaged in study abroad experiences are better educated, more mature, more culturally diverse, and better prepared for careers in a 21st century global economy. There is a gap and need for minority students to be involved in international studies. To address this need, Martin University has conducted globalization studies in Belize and the United Kingdom.
Since 2007, Martin University students have had the opportunity to visit Belize. On these one-week study abroad experiences, students are exposed to Belizean history, geography, and culture. In 2009 and 2010, Martin University worked with the University of Belize on science projects.
Since 2009, Martin University students have had the opportunity to visit the United Kingdom. On these one-week study abroad experiences, students are exposed to 21st century cutting-edge aerospace science and technology at the Rolls-Rolls headquarters in Derby, England. Students have also had the opportunity to visit science research programs at the University of Sheffield, Cambridge University, and Oxford University. In addition, students have had the opportunity to visit historical sites in London, Bath, and Stonehenge.
Students report their study abroad experience as rewarding, insightful, and as contributing to an expanded and more positive worldview. Upon completion of study abroad experiences, students conduct a seminar open to Martin University faculty, staff, and students as well as community members on what they learned.
Planning for additional Martin University studies abroad are underway. Interested persons should contact Brian L. Steuerwald, PhD, HSPP at
