Mission

The School of Liberal Arts strives to provide students with the highest quality of education that focuses on a range of in-class and co-curricular activities that introduces them to various cultures, rhetorical trends, linguistic modes, and music application and theory. Courses in the School of Liberal Arts are designed to enhance students’ academic writing ability, effective communication skills, interpretation of literature, appreciation of the fine arts, proficiency in foreign languages, and understanding of history.

Objectives

Course offerings are derived from the disciplines of literature, philosophy, art, music, language and speech. Students will embark upon history classes, theatre classes, literature classes and advanced communication courses. As such, the liberal arts degree is a generalist degree that leads to multiple competencies revolved around the arts of oral and written communication and critical thinking. The Liberal Arts degree is a degree track that teaches students the core skills, competencies and knowledge that are necessary to successfully prepare for a career and/or graduate studies in the humanities. Students will take interdisciplinary courses that explore the impact of great literature, world religions, cultures, ethnicities and languages on business and economic systems. Our courses of study not only develop habits of mind (such as mastery in reading, communication, and critical thinking skills), but also address the meaning of human experience and expression. Working closely with their faculty mentors, students will have the chance to take language immersion courses, study abroad and develop research projects and presentations.

The courses offered within the major are structured in a way that will provide liberal arts majors with the following objectives:

  • To broaden students’ reading abilities so that they are confident in understanding materials related to academic, professional, and personal interests
  • To offer students the opportunities to practice, develop, and master verbal communication and public speaking skills
  • To provide students with a clear, concise, and thorough grounding in the use of critical thinking which will enable them to learn more effectively in all of their course work at Martin University as well as to help them to communicate clearly and effectively in today’s complex work environment
  • To provide students the opportunity to explore and appreciate the fine arts as expressions of their cultural inheritance

Upon completing the general education core (60 hours), students are required to take an additional 63 hours in the School of Liberal Arts.
