What is Martin University’s mission?
Martin University’s mission is to educate low-income, minority, and adult learners, while welcoming all persons as students, staff, and faculty in a healing and freedom-minded environment.

Can I receive financial aid?
Yes, approximately ninety percent of Martin University students receive some form of financial aid. Students who are eligible must seek these funds with proper documentation.

When was Martin University founded?
Martin University was founded in 1977 by Rev. Fr. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B. and Sister Jane Schilling. Why the name Martin University? Martin University was named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and St. Martin de Porres.

What is the classroom environment at Martin University?
In the classroom, the university practices the philosophy that learners enter the classroom with some knowledge and experiences and therefore should be able to provide feedback to the instructor. Rather than lecture, the typical classroom involves discussion between faculty and students, although textbooks are used.

What is the class size at Martin University?
For the 2010-2011 Academic Year, Martin University classes average 16 students, allowing for more student participation in the classroom. The student to professor ratio is 43 to 1.

Can I start my education with basic classes since I have been out of school for a long time?
Yes, for students who have been out of school for a long time, foundation-level classes are offered, particularly in English and Math.

What are the first steps for enrolling as a student?
The student’s first step in enrolling at Martin University is a visit to the Admissions Office to obtain an application, or you may download an application from our website. Shortly after, a degree plan is made out by the applicant’s personal mentor.

Is there any way I can receive college credits for my life experiences?
Yes, through the PLA (Prior Learning Assessment), students may gain credit for their previous experiences. Credits gained through PLA may only be used towards a Martin University degree. If a school a student attended is not accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, they many submit their grades, along with their experience, and request credit. Additionally, if a student has learning experience in a particular field, but he/she does not want a degree in that area, that person may want to investigate using this as a minor.

Does Martin University accept transfer credits?
Yes, Martin University accepts credits from other institutions of higher learning. Please refer to the Student Catalog and the Office of Academic Affairs for specific policies and procedure for transferring credit to Martin University.

Are classes available during the evenings and weekends?
Yes, there are day, evening, and Saturday classes at Martin University.

Does Martin University offer programs to assist persons with earning their GED?
Yes, Martin University offers programs and resources to assist persons in earning their GED. In addition, Martin University hosts IPS GED classes and serves as a GED testing site. Does Martin University offer a Teacher Education degree?
No, Martin University does not offer a teacher education program.

All faculty post their office hours outside their offices. Please refer to these postings for availability.

Is Martin University considered a historically black college/university (HBCU)?
No, Martin University was founded in 1977, too late to be designated an HBCU. However, Martin University is the only predominately African-American accredited liberal arts institution of higher learning in Indiana.

Is Martin University part of Martin Center?
No, while Martin University grew out of Martin Center - the original name of the school was Martin Center College, the school and Martin Center have always been separate entities.
