The following new programs will be offered at Martin University:

New Degree Program in Global Intelligence:

Martin University is proud to announce that starting in the summer of 2009, it will offer a new bachelor’s degree program in Liberal Arts: Global Intelligence and Security. This exciting new program will teach students the core skills, competencies and knowledge that are necessary to successfully prepare for a career and/or graduate studies in the intelligence community (FBI, CIA, Secret Service). Students will take interdisciplinary courses that explore the impact of world religions, cultures, ethnicities and languages on business/economic systems and global conflict. Working closely with faculty mentors, students will have the chance to take language immersion courses, study abroad and develop research projects and presentations. Coming Soon to Martin University! (September 2009)

To obtain licensure in Indiana as a Health Facility Administrator (HFA), one must meet the requirements of a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree in long term health care or complete a specialized long term care course approved by the state. In addition to a bachelor’s degree, Martin University is preparing to offer this specialized six week state approved course required for obtaining the HFA administrator license. Students may take this class alone or use the opportunity to help complete a bachelor’s degree program majoring in any of several related fields. For additional information, contact:

Coming This Fall, Medical Coding Certificate Program! (September 2009)

Martin University is proud to announce a new program. This fall the university will be offering classes in Medical Coding. These classes will be applied to a Medical Coding Certificate. The program will take about 18 months to complete, and students can pursue careers in hospitals, doctor’s offices, nursing homes and insurance companies. Interested candidates can contact:

Martin University Changes Destinies

Welcome to Martin University! As the start of the fall 2008 semester approaches, Martin University is proud to usher in its thirty first year of offering a quality education to Indiana students from varied and diverse backgrounds. Martin’s new president, Dr. Algeania Freeman and its staff and faculty are committed to establishing Martin University as a premiere center of educational excellence by providing a student-centered learning environment that is committed to changing the destinies of ordinary and disenfranchised persons so that they can become extraordinary citizen leaders in their communities and in the world.

For 31 years, Dr. Algeania Marie Warren Freeman has served as an administrator, educator, fundraiser, and civic leader/volunteer. As an administrator, Dr. Freeman has managed 130 academic programs at various colleges and universities, supervised over 495 employees, and administered budgets totaling $42,500,000. Dr. Freeman has secured external resources of $30,761,000, and she successfully completed a $20,000,000 capital campaign as a college President. She has cultivated and solicited funds from 65 corporations and foundations. Formally, Dr. Freeman served as President at Livingstone in Salisbury, North Carolina. While at Livingstone, she established a NASA SEMAA Center, a Center for Parental Options and Opportunities, a Family Literacy Center, an Academic Village Center, renovated two major academic buildings, refurbished six resident halls and also renovated the athletic complex. Dr. Freeman was one of the first President's to receive the Harlem Renaissance “Guardian of Our Legacy Award” for Outstanding Service as a President of a Historically Black College and University.

Dr. Freeman also served as a member of the White House’s HBCU $300 million dollar Capital Financing Committee. Previously, she served twice as a Pentagon Fellow and International Consultant in South Africa for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Dr. Freeman served as a member of the congressionally mandated National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine Study Committee on Allied Health. She was a National Finalist for the White House Fellows Program. Dr. Freeman is a Fellow of the American Society of Allied Health.

During 2005-2006 while working as the Vice President of Development at the Foundation for Independent Higher Education, an organization that represents 650 private colleges and universities as well as 36 state and regional fundraising associations, Freeman also founded and served as program director for the Kellogg Collegiate Women of Color Leadership Development Institute which received funding support from eight national foundations, corporations, and the CIA. She also served as a Senior Fellow at the University of Maryland of Eastern Shore. Dr. Freeman served previously as the Vice-President for program development at Southern California College, Acting Vice-President of Advancement at Norfolk State University, Assistant Vice-President of Academic Planning and Program Development at Morgan State University, Dean of the School of Public and Allied Health at East Tennessee State University , Dean of the Division of Consumer and Health Sciences at Orange Coast College, Chair of the Department of Community Health and Rehabilitation at Norfolk State University, and Chair of the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts at North Carolina A&T State University.

Dr. Freeman previously spent more than 16 years in a variety of positions at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA., (1997-2001; 1978-1987; 1973-1976), including acting vice president of advancement, executive director of the university foundation, and chair of the Department of Community Health and Rehabilitation. She also served as a tenured professor in the Schools of Education, Liberal Arts, and Health Related Professions and Natural Sciences at Norfolk State University where she was listed as “Who’s Who Among Outstanding Teachers as nominated by Who’s Who Among Outstanding Students.”

Dr. Freeman has made history three times; she was the first African-American woman administrator to be appointed at a four-year majority institution in the state of Tennessee; the first African-American woman president of Livingstone College in its 120 year old history; and presently she is the first African-American woman to serve as President of Martin University.

President Freeman states that she has “a commitment to produce well educated graduates who will be competitive leaders in the global marketplace through a values-based education with excellence, efficiency, and effectiveness.”
